Blackwood wins IAEM award

Oklahoma State University student Karen Blackwood has received the International Association
of Emergency Managers -USA 2011 Civilian Uniformed Services Emergency Manager of the
Year Award. Blackwood, an Emergency Management Officer, Naval Support Activity Mid-South,
will be presented with the award at the IAEM 59th Annual Conference and EMEX 2001,
Nov. 11-17 in Las Vegas.
The IAEM-USA Civilian Uniformed Services Emergency Manager of the Year Award is awarded
to recognize individuals serving in the uniformed services of the United States who
have consistently demonstrated significant contributions to the field of emergency
management while continuously self-developing as emergency managers.
Blackwood, a political science Ph.D. student at OSU, said the knowledge she has gained
as a Ph.D. student is a valuable tool she uses during everyday operations.
“The OSU Fire and Emergency Management Administration program has built upon my existing
knowledge in public administration and emergency management,” Blackwood said. “It
has enabled me to understand how to apply theoretical concepts to everyday operations.”
Blackwood was nominated by the Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Mid-South
for her work and dedication to response and recovery operations during a major natural
disaster, the May 2010 flood.
“It means so much to be recognized by fellow emergency managers,” Blackwood said.
“To be selected from among all of the dedicated emergency managers within the uniformed
services is a true honor.”
