Buthod earns civic fellow award

Oklahoma State University student Kyle Buthod has been selected for the Newman Civic Fellow Award for problem-solving and civic leadership. The award, provided by a national coalition of college and university presidents known as Campus Compact, recognizes students for finding solutions to the challenges facing their communities.
“Kyle represents the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders who are national examples of the role that higher education plays in building a better world,” said Campus Compact President Maureen F. Curley.
A junior at OSU from Lees Summit, Mo., Buthod is an international business and Chinese major who has demonstrated a commitment to community civic engagement while maintaining a high academic record and holding several leadership positions. He has played an intregal role in the Japanese Relief Effort, one of the largest student-led philanthropic fundraisers in OSU’s history.
Buthod is currently developing and implementing a long-range campaign to engage the OSU community in recognizing and addressing humanitarian needs to serve the global community. The campaign will involve and inspire students through role-modeling, collaborative efforts, and strategic planning.
Buthod is among 135 students from 30 states to be honored as the first group of Newman Civic Fellows. The award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, which has played a major role in the development of citizens who are eager and prepared to make a difference. Buthod will receive a certificate, join a national listserv of fellows and have several opportunities to network throughout the year at state and regional conferences and other gatherings.
Buthod is the son of Gregory and Paula Buthod of Lees Summit, and is a 2008 graduate of Lees Summit Senior High School.
