Friday, December 2, 2011
Oklahoma State University alumnus and successful industry executive Donald D. Humphreys
will be the featured speaker for the university’s commencement Saturday, Dec. 17,
at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater. Humphreys is senior vice president and principal
financial officer for the Exxon Mobil Corporation, the world’s largest publicly-traded
oil and gas company.
The OSU/A&M Board of Regents Friday approved the presentation of an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters degree to Humphreys during the Dec. 17 commencement.
“We are pleased to have Don Humphreys deliver this year’s commencement address,” said
OSU President Burns Hargis. “His commitment to higher education is obvious from the
many endowed scholarships, programs and chairs he has established in the course of
his successful business career. He will provide valuable insight for our graduates.”
Humphreys, a native of Tulsa, earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering
and management from OSU in 1971 and served in the U.S. Army from 1972-1974. He received
an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania before joining
Exxon Chemical Company in 1976. After several assignments and promotions, he was named
vice president and treasurer of Exxon Mobil Corporate in 2004. He was elected senior
vice president and treasurer and also joined the Corporation’s Management Committee
in January, 2006. He currently serves the corporation as principal financial officer.
Humphreys was named a Distinguished Alumnus at OSU in 2007, when he was inducted into
the Spears School of Business Hall of Fame. He was honored with induction into the
College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology Hall of Fame in 2008. Humphreys
was inducted into the OSU Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010 and he and his wife Cathey were
named Henry G. Bennett Distinguished Fellows.
The Graduate College commencement ceremony will be on Friday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. and
the two undergraduate commencement ceremonies will start Saturday, Dec. 17, at 10:30
a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The 10:30 a.m. Saturday ceremony will honor students from the College of Human Sciences,
College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, and the Spears School of Business.
The 1:30 p.m. ceremony will recognize students from the College of Education, College
of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and College of Arts and Sciences.
Humphreys will speak at both ceremonies.
The City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums will lead the Saturday processionals, where candidates
will be seated by college. Candidates will be announced individually, photographed
and presented with an OSU commencement print while crossing the stage.
Master’s and doctoral candidates will take part in the graduate college commencement
on Friday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The student processional will begin at 6:40
p.m., with the ceremony starting at 7 p.m. The reception for new graduates will immediately
follow the ceremony on the second floor, and is open to all graduates, their friends
