Freshman Friday: Alex Hyatt

Friday, March 25, 2011

Oklahoma State University is offering  a closer look into the lives of its freshmen students. Each Friday, one freshman will be highlighted on the OSU Facebook page as part of the "Freshman Friday" feature. The freshmen profiles will share students' first impressions and experiences at OSU and create a unique way for others to get to know first-year students. If this is your first year at OSU and you want to participate in "Freshman Friday," please contact Amy Wilson at amy.k.wilson10@okstate.edu.

Why did you choose to attend OSU?
I chose to attend Oklahoma State University because there is no campus that quite has the same atmosphere as OSU. Everybody is very friendly around campus, and it is just an all around pretty campus anyway! Also, all of my family back to my grandparents got their degrees here in beautiful Stillwater, so I am an ongoing legacy for my family!

What has been your favorite experience so far?
That is a close one between the Career Fairs and Lights on Stillwater. The career fair was so much fun because the companies’ representatives all gave me really good pointers and were really helpful in giving advice on how to be the most successful, which gave me a lot of motivation to do things right here on campus. Lights on Stillwater was probably my best experience so far because I got to meet so many new people and just had an all around good time. Not to mention I won an IPAD!

What do you wish you would have known before coming to college?
There wasn't much that I hadn't been prepared for when I came to college because my older brother, who is now a senior, prepared me quite adequately. But one major thing I wish I had known more about was all of the different clubs and organizations that every freshmen is welcomed to become a part of. There are clubs for every single different type of person no matter what your major or interests might be, and if you can't find something you like then you are encouraged to start up your own club or organization!

What changes do you hope to see during your years at OSU?
Many changes I would like to see in my years to come here in Stillwater are in myself. I would like to become a better leader and to better myself in my area of expertise so that I can be as useful as possible to which ever company I choose to work for upon graduation. Also, I would really like to see the bookstore and U-Too facility moved back into the Student Union!

Where do you see yourself after graduation?
After graduation, I see myself initially in graduate school to get my Masters degree. Once I have finished getting my Masters, I can really see myself in research or development of new chemicals/processes that help to make every day life easier for the general public.

What advice would you give to high school seniors who are thinking about coming to OSU?
My advice for any high school seniors interested in attending here at OSU is to first come see campus and experience first hand how pleasant the atmosphere is. Secondly, they should to talk to as many current students or even graduates as they can because time and time again, they will be reassured of how incredible campus is and how nice all the people are. But they shouldn't forget academics! The combination of professors who actually care and other sources of academic support all over campus ensures that OSU is second to none!
