Clairissa Craige
Hometown: Bokchito, OK
Major and College: Animal Science Pre-Vet, CASNR Research Project: “The Effects of Diet on Insulin,
Glucose, and IGF-I Levels in Growing Horses.”
Assisting faculty member: Steven Cooper, Ph.D. Equine Nutrition
What have you gained personally from this research experience?
Not only do I have a larger appreciation of research after
being involved in it as an undergraduate, but I have grown as an individual
from the responsibility, time commitment and determination needed for my project.
What has been your experience with the assisting faculty member you have been working with?
It is very rewarding to be paired with a faculty member
who is passionate about my research project. Dr. Cooper has treated me
like a co-worker instead of a student, which has helped me to excel.
How important has this been to your college experience?
I consider my project to be one of my biggest accomplishments. An undergraduate will rarely have the opportunity to be involved in a
research project for three years. My project has helped mold me into the individual I am today and given me an advantage that’s invaluable.
How do you think this experience will prepare you for your chosen field after college?
I am pursuing a career as a large animal veterinarian. My research project has broadened my knowledge of various aspects
of veterinary medicine, which will prove to be very beneficial to me once I enter veterinary school and eventually the workforce.
