Masterworks Concerts to honor Sherwood
The combined OSU Concert Chorale, University Singers, Women’s Choir, and the Statesmen Men’s Choir will join the OSU Symphony Orchestra to present the beloved “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall in Stillwater. These concerts will be presented in memory and in honor of Gillian Thomson Sherwood, wife of Arts & Sciences Dean Peter Sherwood, who passed away in January.
Unlike earlier composers, this work is sung in the vernacular German language rather
than Latin, and features texts that are more about consolation and uplifting hope.
OSU voice professors Anné-Marie Condasce, soprano, and John Seesholtz, baritone, will
perform the solos. Prior to Saturday evening’s performance, Dr. Seesholtz will present
an introductory lecture on the Requiem at 7 p.m. in room 123 (choral rehearsal room) in the Seretean Center.
A special awards recognition reception for three students will take place in the Gardiner
Art Gallery in the Bartlett Center just north, across the street from the Seretean
Center, immediately following the Sunday afternoon concert. The three outstanding
students, selected by the music faculty, include Anna Menger , recipient of the Dr.
Max A. Mitchell Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Music; John Fifield, the Presser
Foundation Scholar, and Boh Makovsky Outstanding Senior; and Sarah Walters, Boh Makovsky
Outstanding Freshman. The public is cordially invited to join us in recognizing these
outstanding music students, as well as celebrating the twenty-eighth year of Masterworks
concerts.
All tickets are for reserved seating, and are available for purchase in the Music
Office, 132 Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 for non-students
and $7 for students with identification. Tickets will also be available for purchase
at the box office before each performance.
