The Daily O’Collegian, OSU’s independent student newspaper, announced the winner of its 2011-2012 scholarship at a School of Media and Strategic Communications banquet Wednesday night.

Cheyenne Conrady of Kingfisher, Okla., will start at OSU this fall. She is the second-ever recipient of the O’Collegian Scholarship, a $5,000 award that’s renewable for four years for a total of $20,000.

The O’Collegian grants the award annually to an incoming freshman in the hopes that eventually an OSU student at every grade level – freshman through senior -- will benefit.

“The O'Collegian is thrilled to be able to provide this scholarship to an incoming freshman,” said O’Collegian General Manager Ray Catalino. He said that students who win the scholarship will not only get the award money, but have the opportunity to work up to 20 paid hours a week in all aspects of newspaper production, including writing, editing, photography, video production, ad sales, layout and circulation.

“Any awardee who is able to renew the scholarship for three additional school years will graduate with a thorough knowledge of how this business really works,” Catalino said.

Applicants were screened based on their interest in all aspects of media production. Cheyenne was selected based on her past experience in journalism, her involvement in high school extra-curricular activities and her scholastic performance. She plans to study public relations at OSU.

“I am ecstatic to receive this scholarship because I believe that journalism can change the world,” she said. “After working for four years on my school's newspaper staff, I could not be happier to join OSU's to continue making an impact on my peers.”
