The program is designed to accelerate leadership and professional development, stimulate intellectual growth, enhance interpersonal skills, develop career and cultural perspectives, and to prepare graduates for a full awareness of global forces and opportunities.
“The central purpose of the W. W. Allen Scholars Program is to initiate the development of future intellectual leaders who are committed to enriching the quality of life for others,” said Dr. Karl Reid, Regents Service Professor, College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at OSU.
Scholars participate in leadership activities, team building, career planning, self-assessment, national and international travel experiences designed to expand the educational opportunities.
“Together, these elements combine to form an enrichment program intended to reward students while developing their potential at the highest level,” said Reid.
The scholars program was established by Wayne Allen, former chairman and CEO of Phillips Petroleum Company. Aside from being personally mentored by Allen, the scholar receives an annual scholarship throughout their undergraduate studies at OSU, followed by the opportunity for graduate study abroad at one of the world’s foremost universities; the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
All tuition, housing and fees for a one-year master of philosophy degree at the University of Cambridge is provided through the W.W. Allen Scholars Program.
The value of this OSU exclusive program is competitive with other National awards (e.g. Gates Cambridge, Goldwater, Truman) totaling approximately $82,000 in scholarship, enrichment activities and study abroad experience.
