Oklahoma State University’s Honors College has reached a record high enrollment this
fall. With 1,001 students, the Honors College “active participant” total has increased
by 77 students from last fall.
“It is a pleasure to see how many outstanding young men and women are taking advantages
of the small honors classes taught by some of our outstanding faculty, undergraduate
research opportunities leading to a senior honors thesis, and special honors advising
provided at OSU,” said Robert Spurrier, director of the Honors College.
The designation of “active participant” status in the Honors College is earned by
freshmen and sophomores who take at least six honors credit hours per semester with
12 honors credit hours in two consecutive semesters. Juniors and senior students
who undertake at least three honors credit hours per semester are also considered
“active participants.”
The Honors College this fall has 451 freshmen, 243 sophomores, 201 juniors and 101
seniors who are “active participants.”
“This year’s record number of students is all the more impressive in that we count
only those students who are ‘active participants’ in the Honors College each semester,”
Spurrier said.
OSU’s Honors College requirements are among the most demanding for National Collegiate
Honors Council institutions according to Spurrier.
The requirements for OSU Honors College Degree are very rigorous. Each student must
complete 39 honors credit hours with both distribution and depth requirements, including
a senior honors thesis and maintaining at least a 3.50 grade point average.
“We are having great success in the Honors College as more students are working toward
and obtaining their Honors College Degrees,” said Brent Ladd, an academic counselor
in the college.
