OSU National Residence Hall honorary wins national and regional awards
Thursday, March 3, 2011
The Lynn and Francis Jackson Chapter of the National Residence Halls Honorary (NRHH) at Oklahoma State University is proud to announce that OSU won a national Of the Month Award, as well as seven regional awards.
Each month, staff members from the OSU Department of Housing and Residential Life submit Of the Month Awards (OTM) to recognize outstanding student leadership, community, and programming that occurs in the residence halls. Local winners then compete on the regional and national level with other schools who are members of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) Incorporated.
Kendra Fringer, Assistant Residence Director for Bennett Hall from Sparta, MO, was recognized as National Spotlight of the Month Award for December 2010. She was nominated by Scott Busiel, Residence Director for Bennett Hall. Her nomination began, “Jerry McClain once stated, ‘The best example of leadership is leadership by example.’ This quotation has been reflective of the way Assistant Residence Director (ARD) Kendra Fringer has led the Bennett Hall Staff over the course of the month. With December being short, it is often difficult to motivate students and staff alike. Kendra has really inspired our students and has been flexible in understanding what it means to be a leader.”
For the month of January 2011, seven of OSU’s winners were named Regional OTM winners, and will move on to compete nationally. The winners are:
Community: Zink-Allen Resident Advisor Staff, nominated by Robyn Latham
Diversity Program: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Reading, nominated by Sam Holden
First Year Student: Carter Jarrett (Freshman from Westville, OK), nominated by Scott Busiel
Organization: Zink-Allen Hall Government Executive Board, nominated by Robyn Latham
Passive Program: GPA Battle, nominated by Christopher Tiberg
Resident Advisor: Lindi Geries (Bennett Resident Advisor from Yukon, OK), nominated by Scott Busiel
Spotlight: Joel Edmonsond (Village Hall D Resident Advisor from Broken Arrow, OK), nominated by Léna Kavaliauskas
“We are up to 24 Regional OTM winners for this academic year, and that is a large testament to the outstanding work of our students,” said Scott Busiel, Advisor of the OSU NRHH. “This is eight more than all of last year, and to have a national winner in Kendra is just exceptional.”
The National Residence Hall Honorary strives to recognize the top one percent of student leaders living in college and university housing at NACURH member schools. NRHH encourages the development and continued commitment to leadership within the areas of recognition, community service, and scholastics on the local, regional, and national levels. Busiel and Michael DuPont, Residence Director for Village Halls CASNR and HES, are the advisors for the OSU NRHH.
OSU Housing and Residential Life houses over 7,000 residents in twenty-four residences halls and seven family and graduate student housing neighborhoods. Three types of housing options are offered: community style halls, suites, and apartments. The department employs over 50 full-time and 300 part-time workers, and offers over 350 student leadership positions. The Department celebrated its Centennial in 2010.
