Six students from Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business recently earned top awards at the 2011 State Leadership Conference for Oklahoma Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda, which was held April 1-2 in Tulsa, Okla. All of the students qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., this June.

Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda is the largest business student organization in the world, offering its members the best in leadership, communication and team-building education. This year’s conference offered more than 50 competitive and skills events from the areas of technology, public speaking, business, finance and management.

Individual awards for OSU students included:

  • Robert Lemons, first place in Microeconomics and second place in Computer Concepts
  • Drew Burkhart, first place in Accounting Principles and third place in Computer Concepts
  • Megan Wynn, first place in Supervision and second place in Marketing Concepts
  • Jonathan Bartlett, first place in Impromptu Speaking and third place in Macroeconomics
  • Kyle Buthod, second place in International Business and second place in Phi Beta Lambda Facts
  • Mark Fiegener and Kyle Buthod, first place team in Integrated Marketing Campaign

The OSU Phi Beta Lambda chapter was also selected for several awards, including first place in Public Relations and second place in Outstanding Phi Beta Lambda Chapter.

“It feels wonderful to win these awards,” said Wynn, a marketing student in the Spears School. “Every person that went with the OSU-Stillwater chapter placed first in at least one of their events. I don’t know if any other school could say that. I am very proud of our chapter for our success.”

In addition, Sarah Chabinak , senior academic counselor at the Spears School and the adviser for OSU’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter, was recognized as the 2010-2011 Outstanding Oklahoma Phi Beta Lambda Adviser.

“It was so wonderful to see our students recognized on stage for their efforts,” Chabinak said. “Even though OSU is a small chapter by number of members, our students continually perform well each year in their competitions and present a professional image as they represent OSU. Our students will perform well at the national conference because of their hard work and the high quality of business education they receive in the Spears School of Business.”
