OSU provost elected to national academy

Friday, April 29, 2011

The National Academy of Education has elected Oklahoma State University Provost Robert J. Sternberg as a member for his pioneering efforts in educational research and policy development. The academy promotes high quality educational research and its use in policy formation and practice.

“The academy’s entire membership votes on nominees each year, and Bob’s selection speaks loudly about his accomplishments as one of the most highly cited research authors and one of the top 100 psychologists of the 20th century,” said OSU President Burns Hargis. “We congratulate him on this milestone in his career, and take this opportunity to express our thanks and gratitude for his service to OSU and higher education.”

In announcing the election of Sternberg and ten others, academy president Dr. Susan Fuhrman called the newly elected members “preeminent leaders in their respective areas of educational research, where they have had an extraordinary impact on education in the U.S.”

Sternberg is provost and senior vice president and professor of psychology at OSU. He is the former dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, and he also formerly served as IBM Professor of Psychology and Education and professor of management at Yale University. Sternberg's doctorate in psychology is from Stanford. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Yale.

In addition to serving on the academy’s expert study panels that address pressing issues in education, members are also deeply engaged in professional development programs such as the NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and the NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program.

The National Academy of Education was founded in 1965 and consists of U.S. members and foreign associates.
