OSU students excel at design competition

Two OSU School of Architecture students, Andrew Sedersten and Carlie Rhodes, have placed among the top six in separate categories of the 2010-2011 ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition that included entries from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Sedersten, from Berryhill, received an honorable mention for his design of an Oklahoma City homeless assistance center in the Homeless Assistance Center category where there were 218 entries and six awards.

Rhodes, from Edmond, received an honorable mention for her design of a mixed-use transportation center for Vancouver, Canada in the open category where there were 182 entries and six awards.

Sedersten will be a fifth year architecture student in the fall, and Rhodes graduated last spring and is currently working as an intern architect for Hornbeek Blatt Architects in Edmond. Both projects will be promoted in a competition summary publication, a press release, and on ARCHIVE100.org, an online exhibition celebrating architecture.

Sedersten developed his project during a team-taught design studio at OSU. His mentors include Drs. Jeanne Homer, Tom Spector, Jerry Stivers, Khaled Mansy, and John Phillips. Dr. Moh’d Bilbeisi was Rhodes faculty mentor.

The competition was open to all ACSA member schools in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and American Institute of Steel Construction coordinate and sponsor the annual competition that challenges students to explore a variety of design issues related to the use of steel in design and construction.
