OSU Wind Ensemble in concert tonight
The Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble, Dr. Joseph Missal, conductor, will present its second concert of the fall semester Thursday, November 17, at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall.
Composed of the most outstanding graduate and undergraduate wind and percussion performers at the university, the 50 – member group is dedicated to the performance of the finest wind repertoire, regardless of period or disposition of forces.
The concert repertoire will begin with G-Spot Tornado by Frank Zappa. Set originally as computer music and then for the Ensemble Moderne in Paris, this version was done specifically for the OSU Ensemble by Michael Raiber.
Guest composer Joel Puckett will join the group for the Oklahoma premier of his The Shadow of Sirius for flute soloist and wind ensemble. Puckett is on the composition faculty at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and also composer – in – residence for the Chicago Youth Symphony. Dr. Virginia Broffitt, OSU Assistant Professor of Flute, will be featured soloist. Broffitt holds advanced degrees from the University of Cincinnati College – Conservatory of Music and an undergraduate degree from the North Carolina School for the Arts.
Also on the program will be Vincent Persichetti’s masterwork for wind ensemble – Symphony No. 6. The concert concludes with Pulitizer-Prize winning composer John Adams’ Short Ride on a Fast Machine.
This concert is being performed in recognition of Michael and Anne Greenwood. The Greenwoods are both alumni of Oklahoma State University. Michael is the Founder and Managing Director of Carnegie Capital LLC, a corporate finance advisory firm, while Anne after retiring from a corporate accounting career with several Fortune 500 Companies, serves as a community volunteer on various charitable organization boards. Since returning to Stillwater in 2007, the Greenwoods have become active in and supportive of numerous philanthropic causes throughout the Stillwater community and Oklahoma State University including the OSU Friends of Music and the OSU Cowboy Marching Band.
