OSU’s Spears School of Business will host Premier Accounting Conferences
The School of Accounting in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University
will host the 7th annual Oil and Gas Accounting Conference and the 11th annual Accounting
and Financial Reporting Conference at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City on
Nov. 17-18.
“Over the years, the experts presenting at these conferences have provided an excellent
opportunity for Oklahoma accounting professionals to obtain updates as well as hear
discussions on industry changes that might be coming in the future,” said Bud Lacy,
department head of the OSU School of Accounting. “We have a great slate of speakers
scheduled. I really think these may be the best conferences we’ve ever had.”
The Oil and Gas Accounting Conference will be from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 17, featuring such
expert speakers as Stephen Comstock, manager of tax policy for the American Petroleum
Institute; Jeff Andrews, audit partner with KPMG LLC; Ken Seaman, assistant controller
at ConocoPhillips’ Houston division; and Jonathan Duersch, associate chief accountant
at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. At the conference, the speakers will
address tax provisions, the FASB/IASB proposal for lease accounting and various issues
regarding financial reporting.
“We are extremely excited about the outstanding professionals who will be speaking
at this year’s Oil and Gas Accounting Conference,” said Charlotte Wright, professor
and Lanny Chasteen chair of accounting at OSU. “Given the rapidly changing business
environment, our conference is an excellent way to get the latest and most relevant
industry accounting and tax information.”
The Accounting and Financial Reporting Conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. on Nov. 18. In the morning sessions, Mike Starr, deputy chief accountant for
policy support and market monitoring at the SEC, will give an SEC update and discuss
the priorities for the coming year, and Daryl Buck, member of the Financial Accounting
Standards Board, will present an FASB update. Jay Hanson of the Public Company Accounting
Oversight Board will give a PCAOB update, and a review of the challenges for preparers
will be given by Jack Markey, director of technical accounting research and tax accounting
at Quest Diagnostics Inc. The luncheon speaker will be Lee Manzer, professor of marketing
in the Spears School.
One of the afternoon sessions will be led by Elaine Dodd, vice president of the fraud
division of the Oklahoma Bankers Association. Her presentation is entitled “The Face
of Fraud in 2011.” For the second afternoon session, Carol Johnson, associate professor
of accounting at OSU, will present “Fraud and the Corporate Psychopath.”
Registration for the Oil and Gas Accounting Conference, including materials and refreshments,
is $135 per person, or $110 if the participant is also attending the Accounting and
Financial Reporting Conference.
Registration for the Accounting and Financial Reporting Conference is $260 per person
if received by Nov. 10, or $285 after Nov. 10. A group discount fee of $235 is available
for 10 or more people from the same company. A portion of the proceeds from these
conferences is used by the School of Accounting to pay for scholarships, graduate
assistants and faculty professional development.
Participants can earn 11 hours of CPE credit, including 2 hours of ethics, by attending
both conferences.
