With proper use, blinds and shades help

 White window shades, drapes, or blinds reflect heat away from the house or office space. Lower and close blinds with slants facing upward to deflect direct sunlight into a room. Close curtains on south and west-facing windows during the day to reduce heat load. For more, click here.
