Spears School of Business faculty member to receive Outreach Faculty Excellence award

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Goutam Chakraborty
Goutam Chakraborty, a professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business, is the recipient of the 2010-2011 Outreach Faculty Excellence Award. OSU’s Division of International Studies and Outreach will present the award to Chakraborty on Nov. 29 at the Conoco Phillips Alumni Center.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the award, which was created to recognize and honor the contributions made by faculty as part of the outreach mission of OSU.

Chakraborty has had many great accomplishments while teaching at OSU. On a national level, he received the Bronze Award for Excellence in Teaching through Distance Learning from the United State Distance Learning Association in April 2009 in St. Louis. On a regional level, in October he was chosen for the 2011 Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Service award from the University Professional Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) for the central region. Chakraborty has also received various awards from the Spears School and OSU for his commitment to his research, teaching and outreach efforts.

Chakraborty has participated in outreach since 1991. He said he sincerely enjoys teaching and interacting with professionals via outreach activities. One of his favorite outreach activities is a course he teaches called “Strategic Digital Business Management,” which is offered in an executive MBA program with Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates.

“The course is an eye opener to strategic decision making in the digital world,” one Zayed University student said. “The course was excellent and informative.”

Chakraborty’s commitment and service to his students are outstanding. He consistently receives high ratings on his evaluations from his students in his outreach courses.

“I only wish that every dollar I had ever invested in education had yielded such high returns in terms of what I learned,” said one of his students from last semester.

When it comes to creativity in course content, Chakraborty develops the curriculum and teaches courses on database marketing, data mining, advanced data mining, business analytics and strategic digital business management. These courses cannot rely on textbooks due to the course content and the constant changes in technology, so Chakraborty said he consistently reviews and redesigns the courses to keep the content relevant.

“Dr. C continues to be the best professor I have experienced in either my undergraduate or graduate studies,” said one of Chakraborty’s distance learning students. “He expects a lot but he also teaches a lot, so his expectations are warranted. It’s also amazing how much he helps students try to find work after they graduate. OSU is extremely fortunate to have him.”
