Tenth anniversary 9/11 memorial and display today

Oklahoma State University is set to recognize the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday, Sept. 9.  Faculty, staff and student volunteers are joining local firefighters in reading aloud the names of the 2,977 people who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the crash of United Flight #93 in Shanksville, Penn. from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. near the OSU Library fountain.

The campus is being asked to pause for a moment of silence at certain times during the day to mark major incidents of 9/11, at 8:46 a.m. (North Tower), 9:02 a.m. (South Tower), 9:37 a.m. (Pentagon) and 10:03 a.m. (Shanksville). A bell is rung every ten minutes during the name reading. Members of the OSU ROTC and the Fire Protection Society will serve as honor guards.

A memorial display, featuring a large artifact from the remains of the World Trade Center, is positioned for public viewing near the OSU Library today. The same display was featured Thursday night outside Boone Pickens Stadium, on Sunday it will be at the Stillwater Public Library, and again at the OSU Library from September 12 - 30. The memorial display will remain on campus in the lobby of Fire Protection Publications and the headquarters of International Fire Service Training Association.
