The Spacious Anteroom by Cassie Brown

Studio art from three seniors featured at Gardiner Art Gallery

The artwork of three OSU seniors, who will soon receive their bachelor’s degree in fine arts, will be featured Nov. 30 – Dec. 12 in the Gardiner Art Gallery. The three, Cassie Brown, Krystal L. Harper and Christina Naruszewicz, will soon graduate from OSU’s intensive program of studio art.

The exhibition opening and public reception is set for Thursday, Dec. 1, at 5 p.m. in the Gardiner Art Gallery. The artists will present their work in a gallery talk from 6 - 7 p.m.

Cassie Brown offers a series of drawings and paintings in which she references the various sets and backdrops of 1960s and ’70-era science fiction films and incorporates them into each scene to establish a cloistered and unreal sensation. Her work centers on the study and examination of how we, as humans, have envisioned our own future from a past perspective and how we interpret these visions today.

Krystal L. Harper’s artistic goal is to critique our society’s need to grasp history and make it a force of unalterable truth. To achieve this, she creates the illusion of a “historically viable” document to engage the audience and inquire, “What if this is true instead of what you believe?” Krystal waves meticulous renditions of fantastic creatures in a style that references early fauna studies.

Originally inspired by her observations of nature, Christina Naruszewicz encourages the viewer to look at nature’s design in a new way, while also exploring relationships and personal memories that inspire her pieces. However, not all of her pieces are an aesthetic response to the animals. Some of her sculptures have an intrapersonal connection to her and the people in her life.

The Gardiner Art Gallery is fully accessible and located on the first floor of the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts. Gallery hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10:00 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Sundays and university holidays.
