Two OSU students recognized at national conference

Two OSU students were honored for achievements in and out of the classroom at the Women of Color Conference held recently in Dallas. Brandi Andrews, a senior from Oklahoma City, majoring in industrial engineering and management, was recognized as outstanding student athlete for distance running. Wilmon Brown III, a senior from Tulsa majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, was honored as one of two finalists for the CCGJULT Engineering Challenge. He will be competeing at the Black Engineer of the Year Award Conference in Feb. 2012 in Philadelphia, Penn.

This was the first year in the 16-year history of the national conference that students were honored and OSU received two of the 13 awards presented.  Another Oklahoman, Courtney Garcia from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, was honored with an award for outstanding research. All three students are scholars in the Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (OK-LSAMP) a consortium working to increase the number of students from under-represented populations who received degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

In addition to the award winners, seven former and current OSU students received nominations for student awards including Andrew Mock, zoology graduate; Cassandra Camp, biological sciences major; Darron J. Lamkin, M.S. candidate in engineering; J. Conner Ferguson, plant and soil sciences graduate; Lauren White, zoology major; Nicole Bryant, M.S. candidate in botany; and Vicky Kelly, entomology major.

This event is sponsored by the Career Communications Group, and the Women of Color Conference Development Institute for Emerging Leaders, which aims to create a forum where high-achieving, goal-oriented students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines can learn, interact, and connect with career coaches at CCG events.
