Brandi Gallaher
Hometown: Tulsa
Major and College: Physiology, College of Arts and Sciences
Research Project: Coxiella burnetii driven modulation of host cell NF-kB activation during infection
Assisting faculty member: Edward Shaw, Ph.D.
Current research scholarship: Niblack Research Scholarship
What have you gained from your research experience?
Receiving the Niblack Research Scholarship has given
me the means to continue the research project that I started last year.
Being a part of research at OSU for the past three semesters
has provided experiences in a professional work environment,
taught me how to perform a variety of scientific techniques that
I will need for my profession, and helped me in classes
related to my major. For instance, when I got to my intro to microbiology lab,
I understood the techniques and results a
lot better because I have already done similar things in Dr. Shaw’s lab.
Also, I have been able to network with faculty and
other students who have the same professional interests as me.
How do you think this experience will prepare you for your chosen field after college?
After college I would like to attend medical school in order to become a doctor. This experience
has shown me how to work appropriately in a professional setting and has given me a
better understanding of science, in general. It has also
opened my eyes to the vast array of different science professions, so I now feel like I have more options.
