Unique two-hour art presentation set for postal plaza
Twenty OSU students will present a large-scale drawing and five smaller ones in office spaces of the soon-to-be renovated downtown postal plaza on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 7-9 p.m. Dubbed “Genus Genius: OSU student art at the Postal Plaza” the drawings represent a collaboration between the zoology and art departments.
The students, in Associate Professor Liz Roth’s drawing II class, have been working on the project for sometime though they’re aware most of the work will be destroyed in the renovation process.
“We thought it was cool that we got this opportunity, because most younger artists don’t get a chance to do something like this,” said Alena McCracken, part of a group who calls its room “The Herpetarium,” featuring drawings of snakes and lizards. “Yeah, it’s fun to use something other than just regular paper,” said Katie Stovall, a member of the same group.
The project is a unique intersection of art and science, and for many
students, their first opportunity to do a large-scale drawing or work outside of a
classroom. “I am excited about the potential for Professor Roth's project to engage
students with the ongoing development of OSU's art collection and its facilities,”
said curator Louise Siddons.
The Postal Plaza is part of the plan to develop an OSU Museum of Art.
This downtown venue will have exhibition galleries as well as housing the University’s
permanent art collection. It’s located on South Husband Street at 8th Avenue.
The students will have an opening reception for “Genus Genius” to display their work on Oct. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Postal Plaza. The event is open to the public. For more information on the project, click here.
