Volunteer to read aloud at 9-11 memorial event for 10 minutes

Faculty, staff and students are being invited to volunteer to read aloud the names of those who perished in the 9-11 tragedy during a campus-wide memorial on its 10th anniversary, Friday, Sept. 9, near the OSU Library fountain. Volunteers will read the names in 10-minute shifts throughout the day.

The names will include the 2,977 people who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the crash of United Flight #93 in Shanksville, Penn. The name reading will start at 8 a.m. and continue until all names are read, about eight-and-a-half hours later. A fire station bell will be rung after each name is read.

Members of the OSU ROTC and the Fire Protection Society will serve as honor guards for the event. The campus will be asked to pause for a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. (North Tower), 9:02 a.m. (South Tower) 9:37 a.m. (Pentagon) and 10:03 a.m. (Shanksville) to mark major incidents of that day.

Volunteers to read the names should call the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at (405) 744-5328 to sign up. They will be asked to show up five minutes early for their shift and will be sent a reminder with the time to be there as well as scheduled time to read. Business casual attire is recommended. If it rains, the event will be moved to the Atrium of the Student Union.

Deadline to volunteer is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.
