Art gallery offers juried student exhibition
The Gardiner Art Gallery is showcasing 68 pieces of art in its 2012 Annual Juried Student Exhibition which will run through April 30. The art was selected from more than 300 entries submitted by students currently enrolled in studio and graphic design classes in the OSU Department of Art.
For studio art, the exhibition includes drawings, paintings, prints, watercolors, photographs and compositions. The diverse styles range from academic realism to expressive abstraction, achieved through a creative approach and technique. The three-dimensional entries use a wide range of materials and an innovative process as well, from the time-honored traditions of metal-smithing to assemblages with found objects. Works on view show impressive creativity and facility with mediums that, whether orthodox or not, are considered primarily important.
The graphic design work includes illustration, graphic design and motion graphics that reflect a faculty which clearly appreciates the importance of fundamentals in traditional design areas, while embracing technology and its role in the creative process. The works selected display success in strong conceptual nature, skillful execution and thoughtful presentation.
The award-winning works reflect the essential qualities that many artists respect. Each one has a definite personal voice that is expressed in a unique and well-executed manner. Benson Warren, professor of art from Cameron University, served as the juror of studio art. Austin-based graphic designer Cody Haltom reviewed graphic design submissions.
The Gardiner Art Gallery is fully accessible and located on the first floor of the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts. There is no admission charge. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Sundays and university holidays.
