Dunlap honored for pioneering contributions
Dr. Riley E. Dunlap has received the William R. Freudenburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences for his career-long contributions to environmental sociology and environmental studies. Dunlap, Regents Professor and Laurence L. and Georgia Ina Dresser Professor in the Department of Sociology at OSU, accepted the award at the 2012 AESS meeting at Santa Clara University on June 23rd.
“This award is particularly gratifying to me because it was established to honor my close friend and one of the founders of AESS, the late William R. Freudenburg,” said Dunlap. Freudenburg was Dehlsen Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, when he lost his battle with cancer in late 2010. Dunlap had recruited Freudenburg to Washington State University in 1978, and the two played a key role in establishing the field of environmental sociology.
The AESS Freudenburg Award was established in 2011, and the first year's winner was Dr. Mary Evelyn Tucker of Yale University.
