First phase of Monroe Street project starts soon
The first phase of a project to rebuild Monroe Street will start the week of May 7, requiring the closing of a section of Monroe from University Avenue to the Whitehurst parking lot until the fall semester. During this period, traffic will be re-routed so motorists will access the Whitehurst and the PIO buildings from the north and that access will sometimes be limited to one lane due to construction.
Major features of the project include the addition of wider pedestrian and bicycle paths along the east and west side of Monroe Street as well as the upgrade and replacement of utility lines along and under Monroe. Construction on the utility lines is scheduled to start the week after graduation with the road work to follow a few weeks later.
The second phase of the project, the construction of a pedestrian plaza from the Whitehurst parking lot north to Farm Road, will start around the middle of August and be completed by early in the summer of 2013. If funded, construction on the final phase from Farm Road to Hall of Fame will take place during the summer of 2013.
