Elisha Mueller
Hometown: Bairdford, Pennsylvania
Degree program: Zoology
Expected Graduation date: May, 2013
Faculty Advisor name and contact Information: Kristen Baum

I am working on evaluating whether or not roadsides can act as habitat for butterflies, looking at disturbance (mowing), quality of plants, abundance of host and nectar plants, and abundance of butterflies. Butterflies are important pollinators to many natural plants and it is important to determine how we can alter our practices (such as roadside management) to benefit butterfly populations.

How has your scholarly work been personally rewarding?

So far, my academic career at OSU has allowed me to grow as a person and as a scientist through research, fieldwork, and classes. I have met many great scientists at seminars who have introduced me to new topics in science and who have influenced my own research. I have also created a bond with my advisor, peers, and professors that have helped mold me into the person I am today.

Why did you decide to attend OSU for graduate work?

I wanted a new experience and Oklahoma was definitely a large change from Pennsylvania. I also instantly clicked with my current advisor, Kristen Baum, when speaking with her on the phone and through email during the interview process. I knew I would enjoy working with her so when she offered me the position at OSU I was more than happy to accept.

What has been the most surprising aspect of graduate work?

I was most surprised about how close the zoology department is. Every other Friday we get together to listen to a seminar speaker present on his/her research and then attend a social later in the evening to get to know the speaker in a more informal manner. Everyone was so friendly and willing to help me make the adjustment into a new town and school. I didn’t expect to be welcomed with such open arms so instantaneously.

How do you think your current endeavors will prepare you for your chosen field after graduation?

I am gaining such great experience here doing fieldwork for my research as well as other students’ research. I am gaining experience in mentoring students as field technicians and how to work in collaboration with my own mentor. No matter if I decide to find a job after my education here or continue on to pursue my PhD, I feel that I am well prepared thanks to the experience I have gained and am gaining here at OSU.
