Leading Mexican pianist to perform

Alejandro Barrañón, one of the leading pianists in Mexico, will perform at the OSU Seretean Center on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. as part of a Global Briefing Series. The event that is free and open to the public.

“Barrañón’s willingness to come to Oklahoma is a great opportunity for students, faculty, staff and members of the Stillwater community to enjoy and appreciate musical talents from another country,” said David Henneberry, associate vice president for OSU’s Division of International Studies and Outreach, which is hosting this event along with the OSU Music Department as part of the ongoing series.

Barrañón combines his passionate interpretative excellence with a strong academic background. He completed his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in 1991. As a Fulbright-García Robles grantee, he obtained his Master of Music degree in collaborative piano from The Longy School of Music in Cambridge in 2001, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Houston (2006). His doctoral dissertation--under the guidance of Howard Pollack and Timothy Hester--represents a significant contribution to the knowledge about Carlos Chávez's music, particularly concerning his Etudes for piano.

Barrañón has been piano faculty at the Unidad Académica de Artes of Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas since 1995, and director of the same institution since 2008.

IS&O initiated the Global Briefing Series in 2001, just after 9/11, to educate and inform the public about developing events, both in the United States and abroad.  Visiting scholars, experts and world leaders deliver briefings to provide a global perspective on current events.
