OSU Gardiner Gallery presents “The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces”
The Gardiner Gallery at OSU is featuring the works of twenty-nine artists in a new exhibit called “The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces” which will be on display in the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts through Nov. 2.
The works, in a variety of mediums, examine contemporary issues and conundrums, such as modesty, security, oppression, liberation and freedom of expression. They also explore spirituality, nature and magic. They represent diverse societies, spiritual practices, locations, accomplishments and attitudes. They elucidate, challenge, condemn, praise or embrace the veil and veiling. Their works converse with one another to create a bigger picture of the universal history, lore and politics of the veil.
The exhibit investigates the veil in its broadest and most universal context. It intends to engage received wisdom—particularly current clichés and stereotypes—and to reflect on the great ubiquity, importance and profundity of the veil throughout human history and imagination. Veiling of women, men and sacred places and objects has existed among people of countless cultures and religions from time immemorial. Veiling began long before Islam and spans far beyond the Middle East, yet it is vastly misunderstood, and is today a battleground for power and political agendas.

About the Gardiner Art Gallery
First opened in 1965, the Gardiner Art Gallery has become the central place for Oklahoma State University students and faculty to experience the visual arts. It offers a range of exhibitions that stimulate active learning, research and teaching about art. The Gardiner Art Gallery is managed in close collaboration with the Department of Art. Each academic year, we organize a variety of programs, including artist talks, workshops and lectures by art historians and critics. All exhibitions and programs are offered free of charge to the community, designed for the education and enjoyment of all. The gallery serves as a gateway to the University experience and the vibrant cultural landscape of central Oklahoma.
