Oklahoma State University's Dr. Steve Price attempting to break 24 hour rowing record
Monday, May 14, 2012
The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is proud to sponsor Dr. Steve Price
as he tries to break the 24 hour rowing record for his age category. Dr. Steve Price
is the Associate Vice President for Technology Development at OSU.
Price will set up in the main lobby of the Seretean Wellness Center with web cams
recording his journey. He is asking people to stop by to encourage him. Price will
begin May 18 at 6 a.m. and conclude May 19 at 6 a.m. The OSU Rowing Club will assist
him and be available to speak with any students who may be interested in joining rowing
club.
Individuals are required to row a certain number of meters within each hour of the
24 hours to qualify their row as a 24 hour row, according to the Concept2 website.
Price has been interested in rowing since he was 11 years old. However, it was not
until after setting the world record for the total number of pull-ups in 24 hours
in April of 2009 that he decided to look into setting world records associated with
rowing.
“Because pull-ups involved ‘pulling’ muscles, I decided to devote myself to another
exercise that utilized some of the same muscle set and decided on rowing,” Price said.
Concept2 is the main organization devoted to tracking erging records, which is the
act of rowing on a machine that stimulates the same results as rowing.
There are various categories for erging for 24 hours that are divided by gender,
age and weight. However, there is no record of a male, 60-70 years old, in the heavy
weight category, which is 165+ lbs, completing a 24 hour world record of erging.
Price has been practicing on the erging machines for four to eight hours a week for
the past two years. He also goes rowing on the water for at least two hours every
week. He does weight lifting and wall climbing in preparation as well.
“To date, I have erged more than 5 million meters, and I’ve done one trial 24 hour
erg for 170,000 meters,” Price said.
