Student volunteers at Oklahoma State University will come together to help families and individuals around Stillwater Saturday, March 10, for the Big Event. This is the 15th year for the community-wide service project that is sponsored by the OSU Student Government Association. Organizers are hoping to increase the number of volunteers from 1,200 last year to 3,000.
Sarah Blevins, the awareness executive for Big Event 2012, is excited about the potential
for progress. Through her involvement, Blevins says she’s realized that students can
have a real impact on the community. “It is my highest hope that the Big Event will
be able to help more Stillwater residents than it ever has before.”
Each group of volunteers will visit the property of an individual who needs help
with a small project. Senior citizens or disabled individuals apply to have a team
of students help them with chores such as trimming tree branches, cleaning windows
and raking leaves.
Volunteers on campuses around the country will also be participating in the Big Event,
which began at Texas A&M University 30 years ago.
