OSU to host Big 12 MBA Case Competition

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Teams representing nearly every school in the Big 12 Conference will compete March 2-3 in the sixth annual Big 12 MBA Case Competition on the campus of Oklahoma State University.

OSU’s Spears School of Business is hosting the Big 12 MBA Case Competition for the first time. The event will be held at the Wes Watkins Center on the Stillwater campus.

“Hosting the Big 12 MBA Case Competition at the Spears School of Business is an honor,” said Dean Larry Crosby. “We are expecting a great weekend of camaraderie with MBA students from other Big 12 universities, but we also know that it will be a competitive environment in which each team attempts to take home the first-place prize. The competition will be a learning experience that benefits each student as they prepare for their futures.”

Teams consisting of four MBA students from the Big 12 schools will analyze a real-world case problem that requires them to assess the problem, research possible solutions, write a concept proposal and give a presentation on their findings and recommendations – all within 24 hours of receiving the case on Friday morning. The teams will present their strategy on Saturday morning to a panel of judges, composed of business executives and industry leaders.

Each of the teams will compete Saturday morning in preliminary competition with the top three squads advancing to the final round that afternoon. The competition is not open to the public.

“The Spears School is excited to be hosting this year’s event,” said Jan Analla, OSU’s MBA Case team advisor and assistant director of graduate programs for the Spears School. “The Big 12 Conference is often recognized for its competitive spirit in athletics and this event showcases the excellent academic performance of our students in the same type of competitive environment.

“Students will have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom to a real-world business case. The company that is the subject of the case benefits from some really bright minds delivering innovative solutions to a problem they are currently facing,” Analla said.

Presentations by the final three teams and a question-and-answer session with the judges is scheduled from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3. A banquet and awards ceremony to announce the Big 12 Case champions will follow at 5 p.m.

The first-place team will be awarded $2,000 and a trophy, while the second-place team receives $1,600, and third place will be worth $1,200.
