OSU Percussion Ensembles in concert on Monday
The Oklahoma State University Percussion Ensembles will present their last concert of the academic year on Monday, April 16, at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall.
The concert will open with the very first percussion ensemble piece ever written, “Ritmica Nos. 5 & 6” by Amadeo Roldan. Next, a marimba quartet by Australian composer Nigel Westlake features four of the top percussionists at OSU in “Omphalo Centric Lecture”. The first half will close with the aptly titled “Diabolic Variations” by Raymond Helble, one of the most challenging pieces ever written for percussion.
The second half of the concert opens with a wild drumming piece “Raptures of Undream” by American composer Bruce Hamilton. An audience favorite follows with the beautiful David Maslanka piece for all keyboards entitled “Crown of Thorns.” The concert concludes with a furious work for multiple keyboards and drums, “The Whole Toy Laid Down” by David Hollinden, again featuring the honor quartet.
Admission to the concert is $8 for adults/$6 for students and senior citizens. All proceeds benefit the OSU Department of Music. The OSU Percussion Ensembles are under the direction of Wayne Bovenschen and Stuart Langsam.
