OSU receives National Honor Roll recognition
Friday, March 16, 2012
Oklahoma State University has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education
Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of
exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll started in 2006 and
now annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community
problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement. The program
seeks to recognize institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the
communities they serve.
“Oklahoma State University is committed to service learning and community service
is central to our land-grant mission of outreach,” said OSU President Burns Hargis.
“We are extremely proud of our students’ passion and success in this vital area.”
The 2012 Honor Roll recipients were announced at the American Council on Education’s
94th Annual Meeting Ahead of the Curve on March 12 in Los Angeles. OSU’s selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from
the highest levels of the federal government of the university’s commitment to service
and civic engagement on campus and to the nation.
Joyce Montgomery is the Service Learning Volunteer Coordinator for OSU. Montgomery
is in charge of submitting OSU for this prestigious award each year. She hopes to
see OSU in the next criteria, as a distinguished university, on the Service Honor
Roll by next year.
“This is the third time our university is receiving this award,” Montgomery said.
“This award shows the commitment of OSU students. It exemplifies their efforts of
sustaining and building a stronger community.”
