Dr. Craig Satterfield, assistant dean of the OSU Graduate College, is recommending faculty and staff consider the Fulbright International Education seminars program to learn more about the culture and higher education systems in other countries. Satterfield himself traveled to Germany last October for a two-week Fulbright trip that started in Berlin where he visited with the country’s Coordinator for German-American Cooperation Harald Leibrecht, who is also a member of Germany’s Parliament.

During the trip, Satterfield also visited several universities in Berlin, Frankfurt (Oder), Nürnberg, Strasbourg and Mainz. The meetings covered aspects of German education, study abroad, and graduate programs presentations.

“There were two aspects of the trip that made this a life-time experience.  The first was meeting incredibly talented educators from across the U.S. as well as Germany. The second was learning about the fascinating structure of the German educational system” said Satterfield. “The topic of ‘the Euro Crisis’ was a daily discussion. The trip coincided with debt relief talks held in Berlin. Being there during that time really emphasized how Germany is an economic powerhouse and how important the discussions are to the whole of Europe.”

The German Fulbright program’s focus is to assist the U.S. Educators network with German administrators in the areas of international activities of universities, career services, and fundraising. The program gives participants an overview of the higher education structures in Germany and Europe, as well current educational issues being discussed, such as “Bologna reforms” and “excellence initiatives.”

Fulbright is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program in the world, supported for more than half a century by the American people through an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress and by the people of partner nations. The program actively seeks out individuals of achievement and potential who represent the full diversity of their respective societies. Nominees are selected through open, merit-based competitions in universities, schools, bi-national Fulbright commissions, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector.
