Student-made “whirligigs” will be on display through Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the north entrance to the formal garden area at the OSU Botanic Garden on W. Virginia Street.

The display, titled “Whirligigs and Such,” is the work of OSU students in Sallie McCorkle’s 3-D designs foundations class. The whirligigs and similar wind toys have long been a part of what is referred to as "folk art." Students have explored the mechanical aspects of wind-enhanced movement while bringing their unique designs to the art form. Each student was required to create an "original" whirligig primarily out of wood that moved via some version of a pivot and a propeller.

The concrete stepping-stones on display in the area were part of a larger project where students created on-going patterns for use as plaster relief tiles and concrete stepping-stones.  That project teaches students several techniques, such as pattern-making, mold-making, and plaster/concrete casting.

For additional information about the art, contact Sallie McCorkle, professor of art, at (405) 744-6016.
