Illustrator to speak following gallery reception
Wichita-based illustrator Scott Dawson will present a lecture on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Gardiner Gallery at the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts at OSU in Stillwater. The lecture will follow a reception from 5 – 6 p.m. at the same location where an award-winning exhibit by illustrators from around the world is on display. The reception and presentation are free and the public is invited.
Dawson has been a freelance illustrator for over 20 years. Companies, advertising agencies and designed firms around the world have commissioned his work. He received a BFA from Wichita State University and continued studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, Calif. Dawson splits his time between illustration, playing golf and attending Wichita State Shockers basketball games with his children. For more information on Dawson, go to www.scottdawsonillustration.com.
The “illustrator 54” exhibit features 40 of the most outstanding works created throughout the year by artists worldwide who enter a competition called The Illustrators Annual. The works are selected by a jury of leading professional illustrators and art directors from thousands of entries. The exhibit also includes commentaries by some of the artists, who explain the creative process in their own words. Originally exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City, the exhibit is on tour around the country. It will be in Stillwater until Friday, Feb. 1.
The artworks are grouped in six categories—sequential/series, un-commissioned, editorial, book, advertising, and institutional. Works on view have appeared in magazine and newspaper publications, adult and children’s books, calendars, theater posters, fashion labels, CD and album art, and advertisements for major corporations.
Founded in 1901 in New York City, the Society of Illustrators promotes the art and appreciation of illustration, as well as its history and evolving nature, through exhibits, lectures, education, and by fostering a sense of community and open discussion.
The Gardiner Gallery is fully accessible and located on the first floor of the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts at the northwest corner of Morrill Avenue and South Knoblock Street. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The gallery is closed for Sundays, University holidays, home football games and installation days. It offers a range of exhibitions that stimulate active learning, research and teaching about art. The Gardiner Art Gallery is managed in close collaboration with the Department of Art. Each academic year, we organize a variety of programs, including artist talks, workshops and lectures by art historians and critics. All exhibitions and programs are offered free of charge to the community, designed for the education and enjoyment of all. The gallery serves as a gateway to the University experience and the vibrant cultural landscape of central Oklahoma.
Gardiner Gallery exhibitions and programs are sponsored by OSU Students Fees, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Institutional Diversity, OSU Gender and Women’s Studies, and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
