Four Types of Orientation Leader Positions

All leaders participate in program components including, evening programs, material preparation, and pre-/post-orientation communications with students and families.  In addition, leaders serve in one of four primary roles:

1. Student Orientation Leaders (OL) welcome students while serving as mentors and engaging participants in a positive orientation experience. OLs present transitional information through large & small group presentations, assist academic advising areas with enrollment, lead group discussions pertaining to University policies, enrollment, D2L, SIS, and transition issues, and facilitate activities to connect students to the University.

2. Office Coordinators (OC) serve students and families as part of the NSO&E office using registration, email, phone, and other communication systems. OCs coordinate behind the scenes operations and direct OLs in preparation of materials for smooth program logistics.  Office Coordinators begin work mid-February to learn NSO logistics and communication skills.

3. Parent Orientation Leaders (Parent OL) welcome parents and families to ease fears and engage parents in a positive orientation experience. Parent OLs provide information on college transitions and student/family issues through one on one conversations, large group presentations, student panel Q&A, personal stories, and guest speaker facilitation.

4. Future Cowboy Leaders (FCL) engage siblings ages 12-17 through creative programming that promotes OSU while providing insight to college life.  FCLs alleviate fears for parents while also getting Future Cowboys excited about their own path to college.  Activities include campus tours of athletic and academic facilities, scavenger hunts, major/career exploration, and family transitions.
