OSU car tag getting orange makeover in Oklahoma

Friday, October 11, 2013

Pistol Pete and America’s Brightest Orange will be making new appearances on many Oklahoma vehicles beginning in 2014.

The Oklahoma State University Alumni Association has announced plans to redesign the OSU car tag offered to Oklahoma residents by the Oklahoma Tax Commission. OSU’s University Marketing department has designed four options, and the Alumni Association is seeking votes from Cowboys and Cowgirls across the state for the redesigned tag.

Voting is open now at http://orangeconnection.org/cartag. Residents will be able to vote once for one design through Sunday, Oct. 27.

All four tag designs feature “OKLAHOMA” on top and “STATE” on bottom along with OSU’s famous mascot Pistol Pete on the left side. There are both white and orange backgrounds to choose from, and two options include a larger version of Pistol Pete’s head in the background.

“We’re very excited to offer these new designs to the 114,000 OSU alumni in Oklahoma plus the many parents and supporters across the state,” said Larry Shell, OSU Alumni Association President. “These car tags spread not only school spirit but also help us support scholarships for in-state students attending OSU.”

The specialty tag is a partnership between the Alumni Association and the Oklahoma Tax Commission. The cost of each tag is $38 for the first year and $36 for renewals with $20 being returned to the Alumni Association specifically for student scholarships.

The Alumni Association uses the funds raised by the OSU car tag to match scholarships awarded by OSU alumni chapters across the state doubling each scholarship’s impact for OSU students. In the past two years, more than $390,000 in scholarships have been awarded to 290 students by the Alumni Association and its chapters with the support of the car tag fund.

The winning design will be announced on Nov. 23 at the Alumni Association’s game day event – the Cowboy Corral. The ceremony will also be streamed live.

The newly designed tag will be available for purchase from the Oklahoma Tax Commission and local tag agencies in Jan. 2014.
