First winner of the Student Chapter of the Year award

The Association for Women in Sports Media honored its Oklahoma State University chapter as the first winner of the Student Chapter of the Year award at the group’s national convention in Phoenix recently. The AWSM@Oklahoma State chapter is one of the organization’s founding chapters.

A board from the national association selected AWSM@Oklahoma State for the honor after the chapter was able to document significant progress during the 2012-13 academic year, growing its membership, hosting professional and social events, and raising $6,000 to start an annual AWSM speakers series on campus.

The OSU representatives at the convention included Oklahoman sports writer Gina Mizell, student chapter coordinator, and Oklahoman sports columnist Jenni Carlson, chapter adviser; Kelli Grashel, chapter president, and members Jensen Santino, Courtney Brown and Corbyn Wheeler.

The group’s professional advisers include Mike Sowell and Ray Murray with the OSU School of Media and Strategic Communications.

The award selection committee was impressed by all of the chapters who applied this year, according to Joanne C. Gerstner, director of the AWSM student chapter program. She called the program “a true source of strength and inspiration for the whole organization, thanks to great groups such as Oklahoma State.”
