Ray Bradbury book focus of upcoming program

Bradbury book focus of community-wide program.

The Stillwater Public Library and OSU’s Edmon Low Library are partnering to present a six-week reading program, “One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Fahrenheit 451.”  The Feb. 3 to March 16 series will include distribution of free books, book discussions throughout town, lectures, movies and public performances.

One Book, One Community is a city-wide wide reading effort aimed at bringing community members together through one shared experience. By reading one book, we each have something to talk about with one another regardless of income level, education, race or age. The kick-off event is set for Monday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Stillwater Public Library, 1107 S. Duck.

Free books will be distributed throughout the community prior to the six week series. Stillwater Public Library, OSU’s Edmon Low Library, and Sheerar Museum will provide book discussions, critical interpretation, and films and performances based on the novel and the themes within the book, which include censorship, privacy, learning and freedom.

First published in 1953, “Fahrenheit 451” is a dystopian novel written by Ray Bradbury (August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012). In the novel, Bradbury speculates about an American Society gone awry where hedonistic citizens are ruled by television and pop culture, while books, reading and critical thought are outlawed.
