University Dining Services expands Choose Orange options

University Dining Services  at Oklahoma State University  is engaging students in nutritional awareness and a healthy eating lifestyle through the Choose Orange Program.

Choose Orange, which follows the USDA Dietary Guidelines, promotes healthy foods in UDS convenience stores and dining locations. Items that qualify for the Choose Orange program can be identified by the Choose Orange logo. The program began as a collaborative effort with OSU’s Seretean Wellness Center.

The hallmarks of the Choose Orange program include:

-          Adding more fruit, vegetables and whole grains to the diet

-          calcium-rich low fat products

-          lean proteins

-          no more than 30 percent of total calories are derived from fat

-          zero trans fats

-          portion control

-          limited desserts

This year UDS added Choose Orange Wednesday at the Market Buffet and Choose Orange Friday at Red Earth Kitchen. Wednesday mornings at Red Earth Kitchen also features a Choose Orange breakfast burrito.

This fall UDS hosted a competition amongst its staff to create new Choose Orange offerings. 14 new items have now been added to the Choose Orange product line available at most of the 32 dining outlets on campus. Winners included:

-          International items such as Banh Mi (a Vietnamese sandwich), Aloo Indian Potato Salad and Mediterranean Chicken Salad

-          Salads such as  Twisted Tuna, and Dazzling Veggie

-          Snacks like Black Bean Salsa

-          Wraps such as Hummus and Pepper Jack, and Cajun Chicken Pineapple
