Works by award-winning illustrators on display

by Marcos Chin

The Gardiner Gallery is presenting a showcase of works from various award-winning illustrators in a new exhibit called “Illustrator 54” now through Feb. 1 at the Bartlett center for Visual Arts at OSU in Stillwater. A reception will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, from 5 – 6 p.m., followed by an artist lecture presented by Wichita-based illustrator Scott Dawson from 6-7 p.m. at the same location.

The 40 pieces in the exhibit feature the most outstanding works created throughout the year by artists worldwide who enter a competition called The Illustrators Annual. The works are selected by a jury of leading professional illustrators and art directors from thousands of entries. The exhibit also includes commentary by the artists, who explain the creative process in their own words. Originally exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City, the show goes on to tour around the country.

The artworks are grouped in six categories—sequential/series, un-commissioned, editorial, book, advertising, and institutional. Works on view have appeared in magazine and newspaper publications, adult and children’s books, calendars, theater posters, fashion labels, CD and album art, and advertisements for major corporations.

Founded in 1901 in New York City, the Society of Illustrators promotes the art and appreciation of illustration, as well as its history and evolving nature, through exhibits, lectures, education, and by fostering a sense of community and open discussion.

The Gardiner Gallery is fully accessible and located on the first floor of the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts at the northwest corner of Morrill Avenue and South Knoblock Street. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The gallery is closed for Sundays, University holidays, home football games and installation days.
