Dinner, dance, drums and an accurate look at African culture

The African Student Organization is bringing a taste of Africa to Stillwater by hosting African Cultural Night 2014 set for Saturday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the OSU Student Union Theater.

This event gives African students an opportunity to showcase their culture by telling their own story. "It gives us a chance to dispel some of the misconceptions about Africa and it also gives the campus and the community a chance to learn and experience true African culture," said Siewe Siewe, president of the African Student Organization.

African Cultural Night will include dances and rhythmic music presentations, including live drum playing featuring two of the organization's most talented drummers. There will also be poetry reading and a colorful fashion show.

A presentation will be given about the environment and culture of the unspoken part of Africa, followed by a discussion. Dinner will cap off the night, featuring dishes from around Africa including, yassa, joloff rice and puff-puff.

Tickets are now being sold at Chi-O Clock for $10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Feb. 28. Students can also charge it to their bursar account. Ticket prices will rise to $15 on the day of the event.
