OSU students awarded Matthew 25:40 scholarships
Five Oklahoma State University students have been awarded scholarships to participate in community improvement projects as they travel abroad in developing countries. The Matthew 25:40 International Studies scholarships are awarded annually by OSU to provide an incentive for students to help under-served communities in other countries while serving as positive representatives of Oklahoma and the United States.
The scholarship was established by prominent OSU alumni Wes and Lou Watkins as an additional incentive for students who are traveling abroad to help others improve their quality of life. They named the award for the Bible passage where Jesus expresses the importance of helping those in need.
This year’s recipients include sophomore agribusiness major Brian Barton of Drumright, Okla.; graduate student in agriculture Paige Liggens from Oklahoma City, Okla.; graduate student in international studies Catherine Molleno from Lorain, Ohio; graduate student in international rural development Timothy Nash from Langston, Okla., and freshman agricultural education major Hannah McReynolds from Haworth, Okla.
Selection priority for the scholarships of $1,000 or more is given to students who actively participate in non-traditional study opportunities in underdeveloped countries addressing issues of hunger, health, education and poverty. Additional criteria include full-time enrollment at OSU, or part-time in the summer session; students are nominated by colleges and academic programs that grant credit for study abroad.
