Guest flutist to offer recital

Martha Councell-Vargas

Known for her energetic and inventive preformances, Martha Councell-Vargas will present a free flute recital on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Seretean Center Concert Hall as part of the Oklahoma State University Guest Artist Series. She will be accompanied by OSU faculty member Heather Lanners on the piano.

The free recital will celebrate a universal Americanism by featuring the works of composers from North, Central and South America, including "The Jazz Sonata" by Christopher Coliendo, "Invocation" by Amy Beach, and "Invitacion al Danzon" by Paquito D'Rivera.

Councell-Vargas, an assistant professor of flute at Western Michigan University, has performed across the United States in recital and concerto appearances, as a soloist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center. In 2008 she was invited by the National Flute Association to perform as a featured guest artist in a New York City tribute to composer Paquito D’Rivera.

With a scholarly and artistic specialization in the music of Latin America and the Caribbean, Councell-Vargas has participated as a guest artist in the Festivals and concerts throughout that region as well as France, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Germany. She is a top prizewinner in several national competitions, including the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, Frank Bowen Flute Competition, and the Flute Talk Competition.

Guest artists in the series are invited to campus to perform by their counterparts at OSU. This performance is sponsored by the OSU Department of Music and admission is free and open to the public.
