Get the latest on "FBI Cybercrime Investigations"

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Find out more about cybercrime from a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations Cyber Crime Program who will speak on “FBI Cybercrime Investigations” on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.

No one wants to be the victim of a cybercrime, but most individuals have received a suspicious, supposedly important, email asking for immediate action that involves a banking, credit card or identity information. The email seeks to deceive and often looks like it’s from a familiar institution.

Cybercriminals can get very personal. They may be sexual predators, they may try to stalk you, bully you or rob your identity. They misuse and apply their ingenuity in the digital world to target you through their playground of computers, mobile phones, and electronic devices.

The anonymity of the online environment gives cybercriminals cover for hiding their identity and whereabouts, allowing them to be evasive and hard to catch. From financial theft to making a global statement, these 21st century criminals’ often rely on fake identities to use an expansive internet that reaches further than criminals of just 20 years ago could have possibly imagined.

What is being done to investigate these crimes? You can find out by attending the free presentation “FBI Cybercrime Investigations” sponsored by OSU’s MSIS Dept. and OSU’s Information Technology.

Refreshments will be provided by OSU’s MSIS Department’s Information Security and Assurance Club (iSAC)with financial help from Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips.
