OSU Students design red dresses for Women's Heart Health month
Wednesday, January 29, 2014
Eight Oklahoma State University students in the Design, Housing and Merchandising
department of the College of Human Sciences designed a collection of red dresses to
raise awareness of the importance of women’s heart health and celebrate heart disease
survivors.
The red evening gowns will be on display on National Wear Red Day, February 7, from
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the a.k.a Gallery in the Paseo Art District in Oklahoma City as
part of the First Friday Gallery Walk event. Cindi Shelby, owner of Ruth Meyers in
Nichols Hills, will judge the entries and award four prizes totaling $1,000, donated
by the Oklahoma Heart Hospital.
Designers Anastasia Duncan, Lauren Page, Ashley Hatchel, Rachel Horvath, Meghan Hope,
Hannah Keepers, Bonnie Nabors and Moriah Slavens researched women’s heart health and
met with survivors to create the red dresses. The designs incorporated the issue of
heart health and the emotions surrounding it in order to create a connection between
Wear Red Day, a day that people across America wear red to raise awareness of women’s
heart disease, the impact that it has nationwide and the red dresses themselves.
The display of dresses as well as artwork and nontextile projects designed by apparel
design and production students will be maintained during the entire month of February
in the a.k.a gallery, 3001 Paseo Drive Oklahoma City.
