Chrissie Segars, a graduate student from Oklahoma State University, has been awarded
a special one-time scholarship from The Foundation for Safer Athletic Fields.
Segars, a doctoral student from McBee, S.C., majoring in turfgrass science, has received
the Dr. James Watson Safe Scholarship, which honors a legend of the turf industry.
The $2,000 scholarship includes an all-expenses paid trip to the Toro Sports Fields
and Grounds Forum in Minneapolis in July.
“It is an honor to receive the scholarship because of the person the scholarship remembers,”
Segars said. “Dr. Watson was a great contributor to the turf industry and a great
friend and mentor to many sport turf managers everywhere. Although I never had the
chance to meet him, I know that living up to his legacy would be quite a feat, which
is why it is such an honor to have received this scholarship.”
The award is given to deserving college students who have at least one semester left
before graduating and who will attain a degree in sports turf management or a comparable
field. The scholarship was made possible by the Toro Giving Program
