Visiting professor to lead film discussion

Monday, March 10, 2014

Tim Prchal
Dr. Tim Prchal, OSU visiting professor of English, will lead film screening and discussion of "Fahrenheit 451" on Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Stillwater Public Library.

The film is the 1966 version of “Fahrenheit 451” directed by Francois Truffaut and starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner. Viewers will be interested in the changes that were made in the film. Many aspects of the book did not appear in the film and part of Prchal’s discussion will be to address how these changes affect the outcome of the story, for better or worse. Ray Bradbury, author of "Frahrenheit 451," appreciated some of the changes so much that he incorporated them into his stage adaptation of the book.

Prchal teaches in the OSU English Department. His specialty is American literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His interest in the history of popular genres, such as mysteries, horror, and science fiction, has led to classes, conference presentations, and publications. As Tim Prasil, he writes audio and stage plays as well as fiction about a ghost hunter named Vera Van Slyke.  His first stage musical will premiere at the Judith Karman Hospice Short Play Festival being held at Stillwater's Sheerar Museum at the end of March.

The film is free and open to the public. Popcorn and drinks will be served courtesy of the Friends of the Stillwater Library.

“One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Fahrenheit 451” is sponsored by Stillwater Public Library, OSU Library and Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History.
